League of Filipino Students Vinzons Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City 09158513904 PRESS RELEASE July 8, 2009 Students March Nation-Wide in Protest of Charter Change, Concern for Bombings The League of Filipino Students and Kabataan Kontra Cha-Cha! marched in Manila and other cities around the country today to voice their concern over the spate of bombings around the country and warned that these may be used as an excuse by the Arroyo government to suppress the growing opposition against Charter Change. “If there is anyone that would benefit from the bombings and security threats flying around the metro, it would only be Mrs. Arroyo and her Cha-Cha machine.” This was the statement of Terry Ridon, Secretary-General of the League of Filipino Students, as the LFS went around colleges and universities to enjoin students to participate in today’s protest rally. Ridon said the spate of bombings and the continuing threat of Charter Change are pushing more and more students to decisively participate in the anti-Charter Change campaigns. “We know our history. Bombing scenarios like today have been used by the Marcos regime as a justification to declare martial law and create the legal situation for his complete perpetuation in power. Such seems to be the game plan of Mrs. Arroyo as well We cannot allow this government to exploit the situation.” Ridon said. Ridon said the LFS chapters together with Kabataan Kontra Cha-Cha! had scheduled marches, noise barrages, whistle-blowings in Manila, Davao, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Bicol, and other cities around the country. “The youth protests will not end today. It will continue on until Arroyo’s SONA, until her moves to forever hold power has been defeated.” Ridon said. Cristina Guevarra, public information officer 09186106275 (Student Christian Movement of the Philippines national chairperson) Kabataan Kontra Cha-Cha holds nationally coordinated youth protest, say never to Arroyo’s tyranny Youth groups under Kabataan Kontra Cha-Cha held a nationally coordinated protest against Cha-Cha today in Manila and in other key cities nationwide. From Quezon City, students of the University of the Philippines, Philippine School for Business and the Arts and Ateneo de Manila University joined in the assembly at University of Santo Tomas, where they converged with students from Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology and students from the University Belt schools like University of Santo Tomas, University of the East, University of Manila, College of the Holy Spirit, and San Beda College. They will then march to Plaza Miranda where a brief program will be held before heading towards Mendiola. In Plaza Miranda, students from the Taft Avenue schools will assemble, led by UP Manila, Adamson University, De La Salle University and College of Saint Benilde. Students of the Intramuros schools Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Lyceum of the Philippines also figured in the protest. According to Alvin Peters, spokesperson of Kabataan Kontra Cha-Cha, the youth is ready to fight the rise of another tyranny under Arroyo. “This serves as indignation to the threats that Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will possibly declare Martial Law, from the mouths of her cohorts. This is old music, justifying ‘terrorist’ attacks to cling on to power,” Peters said. Peters reported that students in Metro Baguio, especially in UP Baguio, have walked out of their classes as of presstime. Youth coming from Southern Tagalog, including students of UP Los Baños are on their way to join in the nationally coordinated protest. Simultaneous protests in Visayas, Mindanao In Visayas, youth and students in Negros shall have a torch parade in the city of Dumaguete. Meanwhile, students in Davao City will converge at the Freedom Park at 4PM, simultaneous with a rally to be held at General Santos City and Koronadal City. “The youth and students of Mindanao are condemning the bombings in Iligan and Cotabato City, but they will never allow the Arroyo government to use this as reason to trample upon the rights of the people, as it had done in the nine years of its term,” Ma. Cristina Guevarra, chairperson of Student Christian Movement of the Philippines said. Kabataan Kontra Cha-Cha is set to hold bigger rallies in schools, communities and provinces nationwide towards Arroyo’s last State of the Nation Address on July 27. “The youth shall make sure that this shall really be her last,” Peters said. ###

Vinzons Hall, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City 09158513904 PRESS RELEASE July 8, 2009 Law Student Councils and Organizations Voice Concern over Charter Change and the Spate of Bombings Law student councils and organizations from the country’s top law schools converged at the UP College of Law in Diliman, Quezon City today to voice their concern over the spate of bombings around the country and warned that these may be used as an excuse by the Arroyo government to suppress the growing opposition against Charter Change. “If there is anyone that would benefit from the bombings and security threats flying around the metro, it would only be Mrs. Arroyo and her Cha-Cha machine.” This was the statement of Terry Ridon, UP Law student and convenor of Law Students Kontra Cha-Cha, a broad alliance of law student organizations and councils from the different schools of the country, including UP Law, Ateneo de Manila School of Law, San Beda College of Law, UST Faculty of Civil Law and the Lyceum College of Law. Ridon said the spate of bombings and the continuing threat of Charter Change have compelled the normally studious law school communities to engage in unified political action. “The jurisprudence we study had shown that bombings scenarios like today have been used by the Marcos regime as a justification to declare martial law and create the legal situation for his complete perpetuation in power. Escudero’s declaration that the Philippine education crisis is worsening, students and youth from Southern Tagalog picketed today the Commission on Higher Education-CALABARZON office to condemn its failure to curb sky-rocketing tuition and other fee increases. Led by Southern Tagalog chapters of the National Union of Students of the Philippines , KABATAAN Party, College Editors Guild of the Philippines , and ANAKBAYAN, the youth issued a “memorandum” ordering the CHED to immediately implement a moratorium on tuition and other fee increases and investigate current school fees which are already “overpriced.” “CHED has been issuing memorandums regarding tuition increases, but these have no teeth and have only served as a stamp pad of school owners to legalize their yearly increases. We say that education is ‘overpriced,’ just as we refer to rice, oil, and other products because education has become a commodity – it is a privilege for those financially capable, and is no longer a right of the poor. Tuition and other fees steeply increased mostly under the Arroyo administration wherein tuition doubled,” Rayan Brozula, NUSP-ST deputy secretary general, said. The protesters also carried a symbolic padlock to show that CHED has not upheld the right of students of Southern Tagalog to quality and accessible education. After the picket, the youth converged with militant groups from the NCR and participated in the national day of protest of the youth. The protest action is part of the protesters “Black Friday countdown,” a series of protest actions of the youth exposing the real state of the youth before Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address. Themed, ‘Eight years is enough, Gloria must drop,’ the countdown kicked-off last June 12 with a signature campaign against Charter Change, noise barrages, t-shirt printing, and other activities. John Paulo Bautista, regional coordinator of Kabataan Party-Southern Tagalog, said that Arroyo’s SONA will be significant for the youth because of news that administration congressmen will use the event as a venue for Charter Change to push through. “Whatever happens in the coming days will definitely affect our future. That is why we, the youth, will not simply sit back and hear Arroyo’s sugar-coated SONA. We know the truth, and we will use all our effort to reveal this and our calls for genuine change, not charter change. The education crisis will worsen if the proposed Cha Cha is passed because this includes amendments allowing foreigners to fully own institutions of learning. Not only this, Cha Cha will also allow 100% foreign ownership of land, leading to intensified plunder of our natural resources. We have made a stand against Cha Cha, and we will actively fight for it.” In the University of the Philippines-Los Banos, a sign-up center against Cha Cha has been set up inside the campus. A multi-sectoral alliance against Cha Cha has also been formed.
