MAKABAYAN holds convention
today; calls for politics of change
COTABATO CITY
– Around a thousand participants from different sectors and organizations
are projected to attend the City-Wide Convention of Makabayang
Koalisyon ng Mamamayan (MAKABAYAN) today at Pag-asa Covered Court,
Barangay Rosary Heights, here.
The convention aims to arouse the
people of its supremacy as authors towards change in the government and
society; most, in the struggle towards good governance.
Zaynab Ampatuan, MAKABAYAN-Cotabato
City Coordinator said that MAKABAYAN was instituted in a critical time
when it confronts the challenge of resisting the gambits of Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo’s regime to stay in power beyond 2010.
The MAKABAYAN, Ampatuan added, also
deals with the test of succeeding the elections in the different levels of
government to weaken the politics of ruling elites and intensify the
struggle and capacity of the people in relation to the realization of
politics of change.
“The establishment of MAKABAYAN is
a significant and logical approach of progressive groups to advance into a
higher level the struggle of the people in the electoral arena. MAKABAYAN
is the principal machinery to increase representations both in local and
national positions, aside from party-lists,” Ampatuan said.
Earlier, BAYAN MUNA Party-list
Representative Satur Ocampo, also the President of MAKABAYAN, mentioned
that the last three party-list elections have produced valuable
experiences and triumphs in the electoral and parliamentary struggles
which were most kindled by the unrelenting curtailment and oppression of
the State against the progressive groups.
In the last eight years, he added,
that progressive groups and party-lists are victims of State attacks. The
widespread, intense, cruel and callous political killings, repressions,
legal offensives and black propaganda aim to terrorize and crash the
progressive groups and their supporters, he said.
“These attacks only reinforce the
progressive organizations to defy Arroyo regime’s gravest assault on human
rights. Eventually, the Arroyo regime earned storm of political squabbles
and factions amid worldwide condemnations of their attacks not only
against the militant organizations but to the civil rights of the people,”
Ocampo stressed.
Ocampo and Gabriela Women’s
Party-list Representative Liza Maza are geared up to grace the convention.
The MAKABAYAN is a broad coalition
of individual and group of Filipinos aspiring to bring in meaningful
change in the country’s social and political landscape. It was organized
in April of this year through the initiatives of the leaders and members
of the country’s leading progressive party-lists – Bayan Muna, Gabriela,
Anak Pawis, Kabataan, COURAGE, ACTeachers, Migrante and Katribu. #
