On Wednesday, November 16, a picket was held in front of the Philippines embassy in High Street Kensington in London, in response to the call for International Day of Action against trade union repression and political killings in the Philippines.

The picket in solidarity with labour movement in the Philippines was organised by ILPS section in London and was attended by about 20 people including representatives from branches of national workers unions including Unison and Communications Workers Union (CWU).

The trade union delegation that joined the demo with the banners, presented a protest letter to the consulate calling for an end to the recent widespread political killings and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of labour leader “Ka Bel” who despite ill health has been held in captivity since February 2006 on bogus and trumped up charges by the Arroyo regime.

Activists from Turkish, Iranian and Filipino community participated in the 2 hour picket. The protest action included a photo exhibition displaying pictures of some of the martyrs of the recent killings and a large poster calling for the freedom of ka Bel that were accompanied by placards demanding respect for human rights and condemnation of the Arroyo regime as a terrorist regime.

ILPS supporters distributed informative leaflets to the public and distributed leaflets supportive of the call for the November 21, International Day of Action against US Intervention in the Philippines that was originally issued by Bayan –Ph
ipines.
