The leftist Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) condemned the killing of Rie Mon Guran, League of Filipino Students (LFS) spokesperson in Bikol, 6am today. Guran was shot at the Queens Bus station in Bulan, Sorsogon on his way to his university in Legazpi City.. He is the 716th of killed militants since Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo came to power and he was the one who replaced Chris Hugo who was also assassinated last year. According to Ka Willy Marbella, internal deputy secretary general of KMP, “they have no mercy even if there is a storm in Bicol and Mt. Mayon is acting up they still continue the killings. These death squads are worse than monsters; their impunity is beyond words,” “In lieu of these killings we have started setting up sanctuaries for victims of human rights violations. The first one was inaugurated last July 25 at the Domus Dei [God’s Dwelling Place], at the St. James Parish in Plaridel, Bulacan. Now there are 20 victims and kin of victims of human rights violations in Bulacan who were the first to seek refuge and counsel at the sanctuary,” added Marbella“Fr. Anacleto Ignacio, parish priest of St. James Parish manages the sanctuary that offers a temporary dwelling for victims and witnesses of human rights violations as well as a safe haven for those whose lives may be in danger,” said the peasant leader. “The sanctuary also offers counseling and therapy services, as well as legal and para-legal assistance. We hope that this would help the victims and their relatives to pick up their lives and continue the struggle for freedom. We are also encouraging other parishes and well meaning institutions and individuals to set up similar sanctuaries in their areas, because we must help those who are fighting for truth and justice,” ended the peasant leader. The Movement of Concerned Citizens for Civil Liberties [MCCL-Bulacan], ALMMA, the Religious Inter-faith Dialogue, civic leaders, people’s organizations and local government officials in Bulacan worked to establish Domus Dei. # # #
