Farly Alcantara, 22 years old, was the spokesperson of the League of Filipino Students in Camarines Norte. On the evening of Feb. 15, an assassin pumped 5 bullets into his head, killing him instantly in a spot that is only 300 meters from the police station.

He was to graduate this March from the Camarines Norte State College  with a degree in Business Adminstration major in Economics, an occasion his widowed mother and the entire family were happily looking forward to, being the fifth of six children.. He was a candidate for cum laude honors.

A year ago, another graduating student and LFS leader from the Bicol University, Cris Hugo, 19, was gunned down in Legaspi City. A few months later, RieMon Guran, a student of the Aquinas University in Legaspi City and LFS leader was felled by assassin's bullets. Much earlier in 2002, Joel Asejo of Bicol University, a member of youth group Anakbayan, was murdered in similar circumstances.

Alcantara was killed at a time when the UN Rapporteur Philip Alston was conducting an investigation on the extrajudicial killings in the country.

The killing of Alcantara and others before him have only made the youth more determined to bring justice to the victims and hold accountable the people behind these senseless bloodshed."

--- Raymond Palatino, President, Kabataang Partylist

Alcantara is and will not just be a part of the statistics. His death, together with others, paints a vivid and concrete portraiture of the government's abandonment of its responsibility to protect and uphold the rights and welfare of the people...

His death will not go unnoticed. We will stand up for the life that was taken from him and for all the others who cry justice.

Youth partylist condemns killing of student leader
Fear prelude to bloody polls

Kabataan Partylist joins the League of Filipino Students in vehemently condemning the merciless murder of student activist Farly Alcantara II in Camarines Norte yesterday.

22-year-old Alcantara was a member and former spokesperson of LFS and a graduating business administration student of the Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) in Daet.

He was shot dead by still unidentified gunmen Thursday night four meters away from the gate of his school.

Alcantara was the first student victim of extra-judicial killings this year and the fourth in Bicol region under the Arroyo administration. The other student leaders killed were Rie Mon Guran of Aquinas University in Legazpi (July 31, 2006) and Cris Hugo of Bicol University (March 19, 2006), both LFS leaders; and Joel Asejo of Bicol University (October 1, 2002) of youth group Anakbayan.

"In light of the brouhaha over the Melo report and the UN inquiry, justice remains bleak for youth and student victims of political killings. The government's refusal to decisively address and stop the killings is manifested in the continuing spate of brutal murders. This has to be stopped and it has to be stopped now, with or without the Melo report. More and more young lives are at stake," said Raymond Palatino, national president and 1st nominee of Kabataan Partylist.

Palatino also expressed fear that the killing of Alcantara may be a prelude to a bloody and repressive election period ahead.

"The killers are targeting members and leaders of organizations who are actively campaigning for progressive partylists. This is a clear simultaneous two-pronged attack against progressives and individuals who are merely advocating genuine reforms in government. The youth will not tolerate these attacks on our rights and welfare," said Palatino.

"If these killings are meant to scare youth and students from participating vigilantly in the elections then the government falls short on its goal. The killing of Alcantara and others before him have only made the youth more determined to bring justice to the victims and hold accountable the people behind these senseless bloodshed," said Palatino.

Kabataan Partylist is the only youth partylist participating in the May 2007 elections.
