NEWS RELEASE 16 November 2007 Reference: Emmi de Jesus, Secretary General (09173221203, 3712302) GMA, BACK OFF - GABRIELA “It is President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who should back off from the investigation of the Batasan bombing. The public’s distrust on her is all-time high and that gives her no right to speak for truth and justice.” This was the statement of Emmi de Jesus, secretary general of GABRIELA in response to President Arroyo’s statement made over the radio that the “left” should not get involved in the ongoing investigation of the Batasan bombing. “Gabriela Women’s Party is a victim of the Batasan bombing and it is our right and responsibility to speak out and demand justice starting with unearthing the truth by making a thorough investigation. It is adding insult to injury that President should state that we should not get involved in the investigation,” de Jesus added. “The PNP investigation and operation on the Batasan bombing is raising more questions than offering solutions. From day one, the PNP, supported by Security Chief Norberto Gonzales, have concluded that Rep. Wahab Akbar was the target and from there sought evidences to support their claim, undermining all other possible angles. The Payatas raid is a suspicious operation that conveniently serves to strengthen their working theory,” said de Jesus. De Jesus reiterated their demand for the creation of an independent body to probe the Batasan bombing. “We urge House Speaker to pursue his plan to create a Congress committee to investigate the Nov. 13 incident.” “Should the PNP pursue the wrong perpetrators, not only is justice denied to Marcial Taldo, Congresswoman Ilagan and other victims of Batasan bombing, but more injustice is being created,” said de Jesus. “In behalf of Mayang Taldo, widow of Marcial, and the others who lost their loved ones in the Batasan bombing, GABRIELA will not rest until the truth is revealed and justice is served.”###
