PRESS STATEMENT - DEATH OF REPRESENTATIVE CRISPIN BELTRAN
It is with great sadness that NDP Leader Jack Layton, and NDP MPs Wayne
Marston and Olivia Chow learned of the death of Philippine
Representative Crispin Beltran. On behalf of the New Democratic Party
of Canada they wish to pass along their condolences to the friends,
family and citizens of the Philippines on the tragic loss of Rep.
Beltran.
Rep. Beltran showed such courage and determination to provide his
colleagues and countrymen with fairness, democracy, equality and freedom
from political oppression. It was such an honour to have met with Rep.
Beltran and his colleagues in April to discuss the human rights
violations suffered by the Filipino people.
Rep. Beltran spoke to NDP MPs about the severe treatment and punishment
of labourers, peasants, political opponents of the current government of
the Philippines and the fight, which he helped to lead for over fifty
years.
