Protest rally on the 60th UDHR anniversary and human rights day

In commemoration of the 60th Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Human Rights day, Bayan Bohol together with Karapatan held a march – rally to condemn and protest the unsolved political killings, the continued political and socio-economic rights violations in the province and throughout the country. The protest action was also a message of support to the strong national opposition against the Charter Change of Gloria and to the multi-sectoral rally this coming December 12, 2008 in Makati city.

The group demanded justice to the death of Bayan Chairperson Victor Olayvar, BM Sec. Gen. Mario Auxilio, peasant leaders Eugenio Furog and Nestor Arinque, AP member Olympio Crame, GWP coordinator Lizelda Cuñado and environmental activist and former political detainees Ronald Sendrijas. Human rights violation continue in province, in the formed of psy-war operations like the continued branding of BAYAN member organizations as a front of the CPP-NPA-NDF by the members of the military and forcing its member to clear their names with them or surrender to them in effect.
Two trucks of protesters coming from the town of Loon and Talibon were even held temporarily by a check point manned by the military, in the town before approaching the city of Tagbilaran.

Among the socio-economic rights issues raised was the scrapping of pro-landlord Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program and to pass Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill instead. Fisherfolks opposed oil exploration in the seas of Bohol and the violation of their rights as local government units local interpretation of RA 8550 or Fisheries Code of 1998, denied them the preferential rights of the small fisherfolks on the municipal waters.

The rally ended at around 430 in the afternoon as protesters took turns of poking the effigy of Mrs. Arroyo.

Amidst the strong rain, more than 500 protesters march in the streets of Tagbilaran city

With seven coffins in front, the speaker lambasted the responsibility of the US-Arroyo regime to the political killings and expressed the strong opposition to charter change of Gloria.

Protesters in front of the Provincial Capitol demanding justice from the Arroyo Administration and demanding that local officials as representative of the people must oppose the charter change of Gloria.

BAYAN – Bohol succesfully held its 5th Provincial Congress

BAYAN – Bohol held its 5th Provincial Congress last Decembe 9-10, 2008 at Arnoldus Retreat House Tagbilaran city. With more than 50 delegates coming from different member sectoral organizations and individuals, the alliance was able to hold succesfully the two day congress. The theme of the congress was “Further strengthen and expand the ranks of the struggling people to end the fascist, corrupt and puppet US-Arroyo regime and towards the realization of the national democratic aspirations of the Filipino people.

On the evening of the 9th, a tribute to the people’s martyrs of Bohol was offered by the members of Bayan. During the whole duration of the congress suspected military intelligence were seen outside the venue and even followed the leader of Gabriela-Bohol, as she went home after the tribute to martyrs.

Bayan Central Visayas Chairman Jaime Paglinawan was the guest speaker and delivered the national situation during the opening of the congress. A solidarity message from the Bayan National Chairperson Dr. Carol Araullo and Bayan Central Visayas was read during the Congress. The Congress elected a 15-member Provincial Council and elected the Provincial Executive Committee: Chairperson Artemio Cabatos –Vice chairperson - Ruben Sobior, reelected John Ruiz III as Secretary General, Dep. Sec. Gen. Primo Espirito, Treasurer-Mafe Selades, Popular Struggle Commission Director - Martina Visaya.
