Protest rally on the 60th UDHR anniversary and human rights day
In commemoration of the 60th Universal Declaration of Human Rights and
Human Rights day, Bayan Bohol together with Karapatan held a march – rally
to condemn and protest the unsolved political killings, the continued
political and socio-economic rights violations in the province and
throughout the country. The protest action was also a message of support
to the strong national opposition against the Charter Change of Gloria and
to the multi-sectoral rally this coming December 12, 2008 in Makati city.
The group demanded justice to the death of Bayan Chairperson Victor
Olayvar, BM Sec. Gen. Mario Auxilio, peasant leaders Eugenio Furog and
Nestor Arinque, AP member Olympio Crame, GWP coordinator Lizelda Cuñado
and environmental activist and former political detainees Ronald
Sendrijas. Human rights violation continue in province, in the formed of
psy-war operations like the continued branding of BAYAN member
organizations as a front of the CPP-NPA-NDF by the members of the military
and forcing its member to clear their names with them or surrender to them
in effect.
Two trucks of protesters coming from the town of Loon and Talibon were
even held temporarily by a check point manned by the military, in the town
before approaching the city of Tagbilaran.
Among the socio-economic rights issues raised was the scrapping of
pro-landlord Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program and to pass Genuine
Agrarian Reform Bill instead. Fisherfolks opposed oil exploration in the
seas of Bohol and the violation of their rights as local government units
local interpretation of RA 8550 or Fisheries Code of 1998, denied them the
preferential rights of the small fisherfolks on the municipal waters.
The rally ended at around 430 in the afternoon as protesters took turns of
poking the effigy of Mrs. Arroyo.
