Ecumenical Youth Fellowship
Against BNPP Revival
Rationale:
You may have heard a real-and current threat about the scheme being
represented by Cong. Mark Cojuangco and his allies to re-open a monster
project- the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) .
It can be recalled that the
BNPP was mothballed due to thousands of defects. These would put the
populace, the animals, plants and natural resources of Bataan and nearby
provinces at risk. The issue of corruption has been recorded during Marcos
time at the very moment when it has made a contract with the Westinghouse
Corporation and other firms.
Memories would remind us that
it was through the collective action of the people that the project was
exposed and eventually the government was forced to mothball it.
However, the Filipino people
were made to pay for the debt we never benefited from. The succeeding
presidents of the Philippines after the ouster of Marcos paid the loan
amounting to US$2.3 billion and
some US$640 million worth of interest payments. It was from an initial
estimated cost of US$600 million in 1975. The Philippines only finished
paying it off in 2007.
Are we grateful to the former
presidents? And now to Gloria Arroyo?
NOW THE TIME TO ACT HAS COME! We cannot afford to abandon the fight
started by our people. We are being called to choose and to act on matters
that would favor the interest of the people, our natural world and our
national patrimony.
The Interfaith Network Against
BNPP (IFNABNPP) Revival formulated an overnight solidarity fellowship for
the Young people to act against the revival of the monster project BNPP.
This activity is dubbed as Ecumenical Youth Fellowship Against BNPP. This
hopes to consolidate the young people to act together against BNPP Revival
by engaging the young people through study of the issue, to collectively
reflect on it as well as to have solidarity with some of the young people
in the area as one way of showing support to the cause.
The activities include:
Educational Discussion on the BNPP issue, Biblico-Theological Reflection,
solidarity night/presentation, Walk Against BNPP Revival and the Act of
Symbolic Closure of BNPP and Ecumenical Service in partnership with the
Diocese of Morong.
This is being organized by our
ecumenical friends through the organizations: PCPR, KASIMBAYAN, NCCP, EBF,
O CARM and Board of Women’s Work. This event will be facilitated by PCPR
and KKKP.
