On the ongoing demolition in San Juan

Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno supports the urban poor of Barangay Corazon de Jesus, Pinaglabanan, San Juan who are fighting the demolition teams sent by the city government of San Juan and the Aquino government.

The struggle of the residents of Barangay Corazon de Jesus against the demolition of their homes is just. Their homes are being demolished to give way to the construction of a medium-rise housing project which will most likely not benefit them.

We condemn the city government of San Juan under the leadership of Mayor Guia Gomez for using an excessive amount of force against the urban poor. We condemn its use of teargas, water cannons and even stones against the urban poor.

We condemn the city government of San Juan for ignoring the proposals made by the residents of Barangay Corazon de Jesus to accommodate the city government’s plans. Such proposals include a reblocking of the area, an adjustment of the spaces occupied by the residents’ houses, and in-city relocation.

Barangay Corazon de Jesus is near Greenhills and the city government has so far failed to present the barangay’s residents with a blueprint for the project. The barangay’s residents have every reason to suspect that the city government is actually planning to construct a commercial center, not a housing project.

We condemn the Aquino government for carrying on with its war against the urban poor. It has been ardently supporting big capitalists’ projects while denying the poor of decent homes and decent jobs.

It is the city government of San Juan and the Aquino government, not the progressive organizations of the poor, who have instigated the residents of Barangay Corazon de Jesus to use force in fighting the demolition teams.

The country’s urban poor are resorting to force because of the Aquino government’s overkill in using violence against urban poor residents who are defending their homes and communities from demolition.

Anakpawis condemns violent demolition in San Juan

Anakpawis Partylist condemns the violent demolition of the urban poor community in Bgy. Corazon de Jesus, San Juan saying the Ejercito-Estrada political dynasty has committed one of the most brutal attacks against the urban poor’s right to housing and livelihood.

According to Anakpawis Secretary General Cherry Clemente, “We condemn the Ejercito-Estrada political clan for their abuse of power and use of violence to attack the rights of the urban poor to housing and livelihood for the sake of their selfish intent to expand their corrupt rule over San Juan”

Residents of Bgy. Corazon de Jesus are being driven away by the local government to pave way for the expansion of the San Juan City Hall, building of commercial establishments in the area and other infrastructure projects for tourism.

“Infrastructure projects must first and foremost be for the benefit of the people and not for the fulfillment of a political clan’s fetish for power and luxuries” Clemente said.

“Would expanding the City Hall, building a commercial complex and putting up a medium rise housing project be beneficial for the people of San Juan? No! But one thing is for sure, these projects have driven away thousands of urban poor families from their homes, schools and workplaces making their lives more miserable.” She added.

Clemente also slammed San Juan Congressman JV Ejercito for blaming “leftist” organizations for the violence saying the residents of Bgy. Corazon de Jesus were pushed to defend themselves after police forces and demolition teams barged in with high powered rifles and bulldozers and disturbed their peaceful residence.

“Cong. Ejercito should not play Pontius Pilate and wash his hands from the violence instigated by his police forces and demolition team. The local government of San Juan knows that residents of Bgy. Corazon de Jesus are against their plan. Still, they went on with the demolition barging in the community with bulldozers, high powered rifles and snipers pointing their guns at residents. It is righteous for the people to resist and defend their homes and livelihood” She said.

“Maybe he is still too bitter on militant organizations because these organizations who are helping San Juan residents fight his plan of turning the City Hall into his family’s personal Boracay Mansion are the same organizations that led protests that ousted and imprisoned his father almost a decade ago” Clemente added.

Anakpawis called for the immediate release of more than 20 illegally detained residents and demanded a moratorium on all demolitions not just in San Juan but in other parts of the country as well.

“We call on the Eastern Police District to immediately release the more than 20 illegally detained supporters and residents of Bgy. Corazon de Jesus. They have even arrested and beaten up a minor.” Clemente said.

“We also demand a moratorium in all demolitions across the country to prevent further violent attacks against the urban poor especially that a series of demolitions are bound to be implemented under the Aquino government’s Public-Private Partnership program that would dislocate millions of families for the sake of foreign and local big businesses. The state must at all times uphold the rights of the Filipinos to decent housing and livelihood.” She ended. ##

Casiño: “San Juan demolition an overkill!”

Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño condemned the violent demolition in San Juan yesterday, saying that what the police and the demolition team did was "an overkill and inhuman because those who ordered them did not consider that the government's relocation program does not work.

“The problem is that the long promised in-city relocation program for the residents is still nowhere to be seen. Authorities should not blame supposed outsiders because it is natural for residents to defend their homes and properties from destruction especially if they have nowhere to go to and their livelihood is also threatened,” he added.

Establish the People’s Barricade against state brutality
Advance the revolutionary urban mass movement toward greater victories and contribute to the People’s War

Lucille Gypsy Zabala Brigade
Kabataang Makabayan – Metro Manila
January 15, 2012

The Kabataang Makabayan-Lucille Gypsy Zabala Brigade (Metro Manila) extends its revolutionary salute to the youths and residents of Brgy. Corazon de Jesus, San Juan City for their valiant and unyielding struggle to defend their homes as manifested in the brutal demolition staged last January 11, 2012.

The status quo-shaking battle in San Juan has shown the fierceness of the mass movement. It is the image, if not, the epitome of class struggle in the urban. The people’s barricade was not just pieces of conjoined woods. It was the symbol of resistance of the toiling masses against the rotten system, the stalwart expression of the brave sons and daughters of Andres Bonifacio who are now continuing the unfinished revolution.

To the youths who have unwaveringly battled in the forefront of the people’s barricade, we give our highest praises. Your show of bravery to struggle even beyond the barricades against the fascist and mercenary elements of the state enlivens the blaze of the Kabataang Makabayan in its historic place in advancing the national democratic revolution in the country.

Despite the dangers of the brutality of the state against the urban poor dwellers, none of you ceased to let the enemy come in closer which have put the ruling classes against the wall. You have fought for the noble intention to defend people’s democratic rights and interests and for that, you have shown how the best in the youth can emerge.

The battle in San Juan has marked that 2012 will be the year of the revolutionary mass movement. This fearless forecast is based on our scientific analysis on the system. As class struggle intensifies, the people will certainly choose the revolutionary path, and indisputable truth that the ruling class can never bend.

Intensifying mass struggles and campaigns is the breeding ground of the exponential advances, quantitatively and qualitatively, of the revolutionary urban mass movement. We have already entered the third year of our five-year plan and we have gained numerous achievements. Like how you dared not to be bound by the barricade in the demolition and bring the fight closer to the enemy, the people’s war has also advanced towards achieving the strategic stalemate. We are now bringing the people’s war closer to the enemy.

The anti-people projects of the Aquino administration such as the Public Private Partnership program is now being pushed through on a more brutal and unrelenting manner. Metro Manila is being swarmed by PPP projects that results to the massive demolition of half a million Filipinos mainly in Quezon City, Mandaluyong, Navotas, Caloocan, Manila, Parañaque, among others. PPP is the grand plan of US imperialism to save itself from the heavier blows of the global financial crisis and to retain its supremacy as the superpower of the world. Bureaucrat capitalists and local bourgeoisies are now more exposed than ever by being the executor of the projects at the expense of the people.

To finish the projects on time or even earlier, the US-Aquino regime will mobilize the elements of the state to ensure this through counterinsurgency. As patterned to the 2009 US Counterinsurgency Guide, while retaining fascism as the forefront of their counterinsurgency program, the state will mobilize its agencies and even non-government organizations (NGOs) to divert the masses towards joining liberation and revolutionary movements across the globe. In the case of urban poor dwellers, the Department of Social Welfare and Development and connected NGOs are mobilized and funded by US imperialism to lead people to reformist and anti-revolutionary ideals such as housing projects that are, in essence, profit-oriented and avenues of greater corruption. JV Ejercito, Guia Gomez and Erap Estrada are greedy collaborationists with the US-Aquino regime and they have unveiled their fascist characteristics as lapdogs of the imperialists and big compradors. The projects to be built in San Juan include a lavish city hall with a helipad, condominium, commercial center and parking lot where included in the business partners is a mall and banking magnate. The ambitious project of the Ejercitos, how much they want to say that it is a government project, is slowly disclosing that it is part of Aquino’s centerpiece project – PPP.

As we expose the true colors of the local bourgeoisies, we can and must maximize the split between the ruling classes to draw the national democratic line and 12-point program that the people need. Amidst the political turmoil, it is necessary for the revolutionary youths to expose the rift among the elites and explain to the masses that they are one in oppressing the people and they are just grandstanding people’s issues to get the sympathy of the masses such as the case of the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona and Cong. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

That is why it is just and legitimate to establish the People’s Barricade in every community and city where there is a threat of demolition and oppression. We are officially declaring war against the brutality of the state. Every community will be a war zone against the ruling class. The people have nothing to expect from the government. As said by Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin, the natural characteristic of the state is to be the instrument of coercion run by the ruling class to ensure their supremacy and keep things according to their desire.

As we establish the People’s Barricade, it is important that we develop and increase the number of young communist cadres and grasp our task as the cutting edge and spearhead of the mass movement. By this, Kabataang Makabayan members are obliged to increase in number where there are concentration of youths especially in communities where young workers, students, out-of-school youths are seen in the direst conditions and oppression.

As we develop young communist cadres, it is essential that members of the Kabataang Makabayan are well-versed in all issues and analyses and this will be done by conducting vast ideological discussions among our ranks and with the masses. Marxist-Leninist-Maoist studies are vital for the upsurge in the revolutionary urban mass movement, study movements should be done in all forms and levels. This is very indispensable for the propaganda movement that will be able to galvanize the marching columns that we want to progress. Above all, we must look back to the four major tasks of the Kabatang Makabayan.

We must also take note that the People’s Barricade will not suffice to answer the democratic aspirations of the toiling masses but through armed revolution. With this, we call on for the colossal deployment of cadres and masses to the countryside where the People’s War have been gaining victories. Joining the New People’s Army, being the true army of the people, is the only resort of the masses to topple the system that has shackled them in oppression. It is very uplifting for those in the countryside to hear that while you are throwing rocks, bottles and Molotov cocktails against the mercenary policemen and even when the clash has subsided, you are shouting that the fight continues, be it in another round of battle or in the countryside.

We will never let the criminals and mercenaries leave unscathed after this. We warn them of the elephant memory of the revolution, the People’s Court will decide. Everyone who has lifted a finger in the execution of this brutality will cripplingly pay for their crimes.

Long live the struggling masses!
Long live the continuing revolution of Andres Bonifacio!
Exert all means to contribute in the advancement of the People’s War!
Join the New People’s Army!

Statement of NDF Metro Manila on the demolition in Corazon de Jesus, San Juan

Liliosa Sumilang
NDF – Metro Manila
January 15, 2012

The National Democratic Front (NDF) Metro Manila salutes the valiant, determined and organized resistance against the demolition of the urban poor people of Corazon de Jesus, San Juan. Bearing the red flag, the residents resolutely defended their homes and their barricade from the forces of the police, SWAT, demolition team, bulldozer, water cannon, high-powered firearms and teargas. Despite losing their homes, the residents even refused the relocation offered by the local government. Most of the residents now temporarily live in a shelter with the help of church workers. Meanwhile, the hundreds of families who remain in Corazon de Jesus gear for another stage of their resistance. In the face of greater oppression, upholding their dignity is one triumph of the poor when they choose the path of struggle.

The NDF Metro Manila vehemently condemns the brutality of the Aquino regime and the local government of San Juan. The state gathered its forces to enforce a violent and inhumane demolition on January 11, 2012 to forcibly displace hundreds of families. The residents were unarmed; they used only what is available in their community to defend themselves. Even before the demolition, the residents have had a taste of state fascism: from psywar, deployment of military in the community, intelligence operations against the youth to filing of trumped up cases and arbitrary arrests of leaders. What the reactionary government thought to be the deathly blow to the struggle served only to inflame the fight of the residents of Corazon de Jesus and give inspiration to the oppressed all over the country to organize themselves, rise up and fight.

The Aquino government has only prolonged and deepened the misery of the urban poor who experienced successive violent demolitions in his short time in office. This is no different to the brutality Aquino and his family has displayed against farmers pushing for genuine agrarian reform. Aquino, like the Ejercitos, cannot admit defeat and hunts down dissenters even after the fight or after they have lost. They do this in the name of business and profit of a few, at the expense of the homes and lives of the people. Public-private partnerships in Metro Manila such as the city hall and commercial center in San Juan are purely for business and for repayment of debt of gratitude of Aquino and local reactionary to their friends and benefactors who helped put them in office. Expect the state to use an iron hand to execute pending demolitions in more urban poor communities such as North Triangle, Pangarap Village, Welfareville, Freedom Island, etc. The government is brutal and indifferent to the poor. This is why the poor are now awakened and they want to fight.

The revolutionary resistance of the urban poor continues and ever burns. The violence of poverty and fascism of the state has urged the youth and urban poor to join the armed struggle and take up arms in the countryside. The countryside is the rear base for a heightened battle against the oppressors of the people. Joining the armed struggle in the countryside remains an option for the poor to engage in a life-and-death struggle to end the moribund system of society and replace it with a society that champions the interests and needs of the people.

With demolition threats, no happy new year for urban poor – Kadamay

Davao City – The urban poor sector of the city expresses its strong condemnation over the continuing threats of demolition as well as the recent violent demolition happened in Brgy. Corazon de Jesus, San Juan, Manila.

“What happened in San Juan is not an isolated case, for anywhere in the country urban poor communities are threatened with demolitions to pave way for the vested interests of the rich. This we vehemently condemn and demand the Aquino government to concretely solve the housing problem in this country,” said Sheena Duazo, Secretary-General of Kadamay Davao City.

The demolition in San Juan are suppose to pave way for a new White House-inspired City Hall, a commercial complex and a Pinaglabanan Shrine which the government wants to be a tourist destination.

Kadamay said in a statement that the people in Corazon de Jesus, San Juan showed great valor and determination in defending their right to life as demolitions and forced eviction will surely translate to workers having to leave their sources of income and children would have to stop from going to school.

“We have the same situation here in Davao City where threats of demolition seems endless and the city government offers relocation sites far away from the dislocated residents’ jobs, schools, and their sources of livelihood,” Duazo said.

Duazo concluded that “it is ironic for us citizens to be called a squatter in our own country and that the Aquino government must address the roots of the problem of the informal settlers by recognizing that landlessness is one of the major causes.”

ISKWATER SA SARILILING BAYAN
by Paul Vincent F. Casilihan

kaharian ng payaso ang pamamahala
nagmimistulang makatao at makadiyos

all around ngang maituturing ang galing

sinisira at binabaklas, minamaso't sinusunog

subalit nakangisi at nakangiting nilalapastangan

bibigyan man ng malilipatan, wala namang mapapasukan
walang tubig at kuryenteng pangunahing pangangailangan.

It's More Fun Sa Tuwid Na Daan
by Lenkurt Lopez

Habang mainit ang usapan
kung anong mabisang pang-akit sa mga dayuhan..

ay!

Hindi makataong demolisyon
ang nagpatunay;
tama ang napiling slogan.

"It's more fun
Kahit wala kayong tirahan--
matagal pa naman ang eleksyon
hindi ko pa kayo kailangan."

It's more fun nga naman,
kapag walang masilungan

Kabataan Party-list calls for moratorium on all demolitions, hits PNoy as “demolition President”

Following the condemnable demolition in Barangay Corazon de Jesus in San Juan city yesterday, Kabataan Party-list Rep. Raymond “Mong” Palatino today called for an indefinite moratorium on all demolitions in the country as he hit the Aquino government for failing to implement a humane blueprint for housing services especially for the poor.

“The demolition in Barangay Corazon de Jesus is a condemnable act that should have no place in a country that claims to be democratic and on the path to progress,” Palatino said during a press conference held in Corazon de Jesus.

“The issue on housing is a salient concern of the people especially the poor. We demand the Aquino government to impose an indefinite moratorium on all demolitions in the country until it comes up with a rational and humane housing plan which addresses the root causes of informal settling and widespread poverty in our communities,” Palatino added.

Palatino said that in the National Capital Region (NCR) alone, not less than seven (7) communities are facing demolitions affecting thousands of families. These are the Corazon de Jesus in San Juan, Quezon City Central Business District, Laperal compound in Makati, Dypac Compound in Tondo, Kadiwa in Navotas, Pangarap Village in Caloocan, and medium-rise tenements in Manila.

Palatino said the rampant demolitions portray President Aquino as “demolition President.”

In December 2011, Aquino added P10 billion to the P7 billion housing services budget as part of the government stimulus package.

However, Palatino said that the budget is rendered insubstantial by the lack of proper housing framework of the Aquino administration. He said that the relocation sites being offered to the informal settlers are far from work, school and other infrastructures like hospitals.

“It is the failure of the government to provide secure jobs and decent wages in both rural and urban areas, aggrandized by the lack genuine agrarian and urban land reform and national industrialization, that produces informal settlers. The government cannot solve this fundamental problem by demolishing homes and inflicting violence on the landless poor.”

Palatino likewise demanded the immediate release of all residents, including minors, and their supporters arrested by the police during and after the demolition in Corazon de Jesus. ###

"PNoy is demolition king"
Groups hit Aquino gov't for violent demolition of urban poor communities

Various groups led by Anakbayan and Kadamay launched support action to condemn the violent demolition of Barangay Corazon De Jesus in San Juan yesterday and expressed support for its residents. Noise barrage actions were held in campuses and a pciket protest in front of the National Housing Authority.

The groups noted the silence of the Aquino gov't and its agencies regarding the demolition and said it was a sign of complicity with the local city gov't headed by Mayor Guia Gomez and the Estradas.

Vencer Crisostomo, national chairperson of Anakbayan, noted that the wave of demolitions of various urban poor communities seemed rampant and systematic under Aquino. Crisostomo noted that more communities are facing demolition threats in Manila, Quezon City and other cities on Metro Manila.

"Whatever happened to gubyernong hindi manhid? Aquino's policies seem to, at the very least, inspire violence against the poor," he said.

Crisostomo also noted that while it is pushing for and tolerating demolition campaigns especially with its privatization projects, government has no clear plan to provide decent housing for the poor and solve the housing problem. He pointed to the recent report of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) saying 25% of people living in the National Capital Region (NCR) or 560,000 families are informal settlers, while gov't only has around 60,000 housing units.

"Saan nila dadalhin ang mahihirap? Itatapon ng parang mga hayop? It is unfortunate that we have a government so cruel and unkind to its people," he said.

Crisostomo said the poor people cannot be blamed for trying to defend their homes and fight for their rights.

"They have no other choice but to fight gov't corruption and violence with militant struggle. The gov't has no one to blame but themselves for the violence. It is so heartless, disgustingly corrupt and despotically anti-poor. This is the kind of situation that breeds mass uprisings and revolts," he said.

Crisostomo warned of a revolt of the poor people not unlike what is happening in Middle East and the rest of the world as "poor people are learning how to fight back."

"The courageous barricade shown by the people of San Juan will definitely inspire more people to fight and may develop into a bigger movement," Crisostomo said.

Crisostomo said Anakbayan will hold protest actions during the coming days to protest violent demolition plans and organize more barricades in urban poor communities threatened with demolition.

Gov’t ‘heartless, anti-poor’
ANAKBAYAN condemns violent demolition in San Juan

January 11, 2012

Youth group ANAKBAYAN today condemned the violent demolition in Bgy. Corazon De Jesus in San Juan today which left hundreds homeless and dozens hurt. At least 18 residents and supporters were also arrested and beaten up by police.

“We condemn in strongest possible terms the violent demolition in San Juan. The overly violent attack done by the government and the police is a gross violation of the peoples fundamental right to decent homes and livelihood. We hold the city government and the Aquino government responsible for this attack on the people’s rights,” said Vencer Crisostomo, national chairperson of ANAKBAYAN.

Heartless, anti-poor, corrupt

Crisostomo said that the demolition smacks of “heartlessness against the poor, disgusting corruption and state fascism.”

“We are outraged by the fact that we have a government so heartless and anti-poor, it is willing to violently demolish homes without consideration of their welfare.

He said that government should prioritize people’s welfare over profits, corruption projects, commercial and tourist complexes.

Walang malasakit,” he said.

Its more fun?

In an interview, Cong. JV Ejercito said the demolition is done to pave way for the building of a city hall, a commercial complex and a Pinaglabanan Shrine, which they want to be a tourist destination.

“It seems the Ejercitos want to have much fun in San Juan. It is ironic that while we want foreigners and tourists to have fun in our country, we are treating our fellow Filipinos with brutality,” he said.

Crisostomo said that the residents of Corazon de Jesus were proposing a viable alternative, which was an in-city relocation plan which the government has rejected.

“The government has no clear plan to provide housing for the poor. They want to relocate urban poor to far-flung villages and danger zones. The people had no other option but to fight back and defend their homes. They were met with snipers, tear gasses and state violence,” he said.

Crisostomo said ANAKBAYAN plans to hold big protest actions against the series of violent demolition of urban poor homes and called on the Aquino government to stop all demolition plans.

"Di pa tapos ang laban sa Pinaglabanan," he said.

CPP calls on urban poor dwellers to rise up and gear for more demolitions as Aquino regime pushes PPPs

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) today issued the following statement:

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) condemns the Aquino government for using extreme violence in the demolition of the residential homes in Barangay Corazon de Jesus, San Juan yesterday. Armed with automatic rifles, truncheons and teargas and backed with heavy machinery, the Philippine National Police and demolition crew attacked the community and broke the barricades put up by the residents.

The CPP congratulates the residents for valiantly fighting back. Aarmed only with stones, bottles and molotov cocktails, they engaged the state forces in a lopsided battle to defend their homes. They exhibited great courage and determination and collectively defied plans of the Aquino government to uproot them from their homes and dump them to a so-called relocation site far away from their jobs, schools and sources of livelihood.

The Aquino regime may have succeeded in its drive to demolish the urban poor homes in San Juan in order to pave the way for the plans of big real estate developers to erect commercial buildings. But in doing so, it also succeeded in projecting its antipeople character and further isolating itself from the broad masses of the people. In employing extreme violence, the Aquino regime is pushing more and more people to the side of resistance and teaching them a valuable lesson in class struggle.

There are bound to be more attacks against the urban poor's right to decent housing as the regime seeks to clear prime real estate for the use of its big business friends under the its Public-Private Partnership Program (PPPP).

The masses of workers, unemployed and lower petty bourgeoisie who populate urban poor communities have no choice but to organize and rise up against future demolitions under the Aquino regime.

Tudla Productions condemns alternative media harassment at San Juan demolition

Tudla Productions, an alternative media group based in Metro Manila, condemns the harassment of its members and the illegal detention of one of its volunteer reporters by the San Juan City police during the demolition at Corazon de Jesus on January 11, 2012.

Shane Flores David, volunteer reporter and also student of the University of the Philippines Diliman, was pulled down from the spot where she was documenting the encounter of policemen and residents at P.Narciso cor. Artiaga Street. She presented herself a member of the media, but police grabbed her camera and mobbed her as she covered her body and face to protect herself. She was dragged to the police van by several policemen, handcuffed and brought to the precinct. Police detained her for almost two hours and was released only after other members of the alternative press lobbied for her release.
