Student group: Military
deploying agents in Metro campuses, targeting
anti-Arroyo youths
September 3, 2008
The League of Filipino Students (LFS) today said that military agents
are roaming major campuses in the Metro, conducting surveillance
operations and are reportedly "harassing" anti-Arroyo student leaders.
LFS national chairperson Vencer Crisostomo said that cases of military
presence and harassment in campuses have been reported to them by
several campus-based groups.
This, after seeing on TV the news report last Friday, where four
military agents were "arrested" by students of Polytechnic University
of the Philippines (PUP) while taking photos of a local rally. The
four admitted to being enlisted personnel but said they were only
"touring" the campus.
But the students say that the camera confiscated from the agents
contained individual photos of student leaders and protest organizers.
"PUP in Sta. Mesa, Manila is one of the schools with notable
participation in the anti-Arroyo student protests during the past
months. Along with PUP, military presence were also reported in UP
Diliman, UP Manila and the University Belt in Morayta. Foras were also
reportedly organized by the military in UP Diliman and Centro Escolar
University," said Crisostomo.

He said that the reported activities ranged from surveillance and data
gathering to threatening of individuals involved in the anti-Arroyo
movement.
"They are terrified of the potential the student movement can become.
But we are sorry to tell them that harrassment and scare tactics will
not stop the students from organizing and educating against the
regime. The example the PUP students showed should serve as a lesson
to the AFP and the government. Fascist measures will only breed a
bigger, bolder and more militant youth mass movement," he added.
Crisostomo said that they will file charges and complaints against
military agents illegally entering campus premises and will push for
an investigation regarding the deployment of troops in campus.
The LFS will also put up streamers and signboards containing warnings
that military personnel are not allowed in campuses. #
